Ambulance Access

On some days over 100 ambulances transport to and from our campus. Because of this high traffic volume, parking may be limited at times. To help ensure patients being transported to the ED have immediate access, the following guidelines have been developed.

Ambulance Access Flyer

Ambulances Transporting a Patient to an ED Room:

All parking in the ambulance bays and on the ED ramp is restricted to incoming ambulances transporting patients to an Emergency Department bed. This restricted area is identified by signage.

Ambulances Not Transporting a Patient to an ED Room:

Click the icons on the interactive map above for additional information Short-term parking, up to a maximum of 40 minutes, is available in the left-hand traffic lane of the Grant Heart and Surgical Center for all ambulances that are not transporting a patient to an ED bed. This includes direct admits to floors, discharges from floors or ED, clinic visits, etc.

The ambulance crew ,if asked, should provide a phone number (e.g. dispatch center, cell phone, etc); for use in an emergency. Crews expecting to be longer than 40 minutes should use other designated parking areas, including:

  • Ambulance-only parking in front of 340 E Town St;
  • Ambulance-only parking on E Chapel St adjacent to the 285 E State St, Wilkins Bldg;
  • Ambulance-only parking on E State St adjacent to the hospital main entrance;
  • Loading zone at 141 S 6th St, Blue Garage (Across from Surgical and Heart Center);
  • Loading zone at 285 E State St, Wilkins Building (Across from ED entrance); and
  • Loading zone in front of 323 E Town St, Grant Bone and Joint Center

Wheelchair Vans, Ambulettes, Etc:

May actively load/unload at the main hospital, Bone and Joint Center or Surgical and Heart Center entrances. Please do not park or stand in these areas at anytime.

Please do not park in the ambulance bays, the ambulance lane of the Surgical and Heart Center, or ambulance lane next to the Wilkins Bldg. These areas should be available for ambulance patients 24 hours/day.

Organ and Tissue Procurement Teams:

Should park in the designated Surgical and Heart Center ambulance lane.

If no parking is available there, may park in the ED ambulance bay. Please park straight ahead at the far end of the open area, when possible. This leaves the bays closest to the ambulance entrance available for incoming Emergency Dept patients.

Police, Sheriff, Highway Patrol:

Should use street parking or park in an on-campus hospital garage. To exit for free, contact attendant via the call box in the exit lane.

Please do not park in the ambulance bays, the ambulance lane of the Surgical and Heart Center, or ambulance lane next to the Wilkins Bldg. These areas should be available for ambulance patients 24 hours/day.

We work hard to keep patient movement flowing as best possible. Your assistance is greatly appreciated!
