Expanded Rehabilitative Care the Focus of New OhioHealth Rehabilitation Hospital

Columbus, OH – OhioHealth has entered into a new agreement with Select Medical (NYSE: SEM) to bring an inpatient rehabilitation hospital to central Ohio, focusing on the neuroscience patient – particularly, neurological trauma and stroke patients. “This new hospital, called OhioHealth Rehabilitation Hospital, will expand OhioHealth’s capability to serve its growing number of neuroscience patients who need rehabilitative care,” said Connie Gallaher, OhioHealth System Vice President of Neuroscience. “Although OhioHealth serves the community with cutting edge treatments and quality care, there is a need for our patients to have better access to inpatient acute rehabilitation after that treatment.”

Currently, OhioHealth is able to retain approximately a third of its patients who need inpatient rehabilitative care. With the creation of OhioHealth Rehabilitation Hospital, more OhioHealth patients will be able to continue their recovery and rehabilitation with OhioHealth, creating a seamless continuum of care and the opportunity for improved outcomes. The new hospital will increase OhioHealth’s rehabilitation patient bed capacity from 15 to 44, allowing for more patients to stay with OhioHealth for their care. The existing 15 inpatient rehabilitation beds at Riverside Methodist Hospital will be transferred to the new hospital.

“We are pleased to work with such a great partner like OhioHealth,” said Rob Brehm, president of Select Medical’s inpatient rehabilitation division. “We share a common commitment to create the best possible experience for the patient. Central Ohio and the surrounding region will benefit from each partner actively sharing its respective expertise, not to mention offering a seamless transition for patients between care settings.

We believe this hospital will literally change peoples’ lives for the better, helping them to not just recover but learn how to live everyday life once again.”

Select Medical is one of the nation’s leading operators of specialty hospitals and rehabilitative care. For example, its Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in New Jersey is currently ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the number two inpatient rehabilitation hospital in the United States. U.S. News and World Report has consistently ranked its Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation as one of the top 25 such hospitals.

OhioHealth Rehabilitation Hospital will cater to the neuroscience patient, providing individualized rehabilitative care to those that have suffered strokes or other brain injuries. Typically, in an inpatient rehabilitation hospital, patients receive a minimum of three hours of therapy a day, five days a week. Patients in rehabilitation hospitals generally have a shorter length of stay and return to the workforce and home faster, compared to those receiving rehabilitation in a skilled nursing facility.

OhioHealth is already home to one of the nation’s largest comprehensive neuroscience programs and the OhioHealth Neuroscience Institute is growing with the addition of new specialists, programs and the new patient tower currently under construction at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital. Riverside Methodist also cares for more stroke patients than any other hospital in Ohio.

OhioHealth Rehabilitation Hospital is located within the Victorian Village Health Center located at 1087 Dennison Avenue in Columbus, Ohio, and is currently under renovation. The hospital is scheduled to open in August.
